All technology has side effects. The smartphone gives the opportunity to be more productive because we can complete tasks throughout the day. If we only check our inbox when we’re sitting at our desk, we risk missing that important time sensitive email. A dangerous side effect of this productivity tool is we can’t seem to get away from work. When we should be spending time with our families, we’re too busy looking at our smartphone screen. The smartphone is a powerful technology that comes with certain side effects. Having a copy of the Bible with you at all times is wonderful. With the smartphone and programs like YouVersion we can carry with us multiple translations of the Bible and thousands of devotions written by countless authors. The side effects to this wealth of knowledge is the dangerous prospect of false teaching.
To guard against false teaching, the Bereans were examining the Scriptures daily to see whether the teaching was true (Acts 17:11). God’s Word is the standard by which we measure all teaching. Simply put, does what I’m reading or hearing find Biblical support from the Bible? Recently I was reading a sample devotion from a writer on Youversion. The writer said,
“In Luke, two of the disciples decided not to wait to find out. They took off for a town called Emmaus, a seven-mile walk away from Jerusalem. These followers weren’t out for a Sunday stroll – they were fleeing!
Is this what the Bible teaches? Were the disciples on the road to Emmaus because they were fleeing? God doesn’t tell us. The Bible never mentions why they were going to Emmaus. The writer’s words find no Biblical support. The reason the disciples were on the road may be a small issue, but misusing the Bible is not. Today it is missing the motivation of two disciples and tomorrow it is missing the motivation of God.
A helpful article on YouVersion’s explosion of “Bible helps” and devotions in general was written by Bud Ahlheim. You can find the article here . In addition to Bud’s article and at the risk of becoming devotion dependant, here is a list of current (June 2017) Youversion devotions that you may find helpful. Remember there is no substitute for reading the Word of God so choose a Bible reading plan before you even consider a devotion.
